Survey for building the piloting models of VietGAP shrimp farming

Quang Binh province is located in the central north of VietNam with 8,065 km2 of natural land area. Along the coastline, there are thousands hectares of sand area that is potential for economic development. Especially, this sand area is quite suitable for on-sand shrimp farming.
Recently, shrimp farming is carried out in many coastal communes of Quang Binh province and initially brought positive results in creating jobs and income for local people. However, shrimp farming in Quang Binh province have been facing with some difficulties related to standards of techniques and social responsibility that caused problems in accessing to larger and sustainable market.

To support the sustainable development of shrimp farming and social responsibility, Rural Development for Poverty Reduction Fund (RDPR) is expected to implement the pilot model of shrimp farming applied VietGAP in Quang Binh. This activity belongs to the project "“Promoting the shrimp farming value chain and enhancing capacity for the Social Responsible Orientation Business Network," sponsored by ICCO Netherlands. 
 
In January 2015, RDPR’s survey group along with consultants of the Center of Technology Transfer and Fisheries Services conducted a survey at Hai Ninh commune, Quang Ninh district and Ngu Thuy Bac commune, Le Thuy district to learn the actual situation of local shrimp farming and to choose households who are eligible to perform the VietGAP piloting model.

Through the survey, the groups collected information and selected two household groups to conduct the model including one group of Hai Ninh commune and one group Ngu Thuy Bac commune. Expected in early 2015, the project will support this groups upgrading shrimp farms, and capacity building, supporting seed, feed, techniques for farms to ensure the farming in compliance with 5 content of VietGAP standards, including 1) General requirements for legal records 2) Quality, Safety and food Hygiene 3) Management of aquatic animal health 4) Environmental protection 5) Other aspects regarding economic -social, labor safety, income generation and community issues.

Building the piloting model will contribute to promote the application and replication of VietGAP standards, and will promote the shrimp value chain and  support the sustainable development of local shrimp farming sector.
